Declutter My House And Make Some Money

Declutter your home and you declutter your life.  And nowdays it's just so easy to make money from your old stuff that it makes more and more sense to get rid of things that you no longer need and free up some cash for new stuff.

Think you haven't got any stuff to sell? Chances are that you're sitting on a lot of cash. The number of things in your house that are doubtless serving no purpose yet have a financial value to somebody else will probably amaze you. We all walk around secretly wishing that we had more money at our disposal yet we have loads of assets that are worth money.

If you're telling me that you haven't got anything to sell, then you're a better shopper than I am. The average person is forever buying stuff that they never use - stuff that seemed like a good idea at the time. We all do it. Plus, even the stuff that we do use has a shelf life, a point in time where we simply don't use it anymore. So, we've all got stuff to sell. No question.

If you've got a garage, a loft, a cellar, a shed or any king of storage space then you've undoubtably got some stuff that you simply don't use anymore. You've effectively got cash sitting around the place.

How to convert stuff into cash

In the old days it was garage sales or car boot sales, neither of which ever appealed to me. These day though, it's totally different. These days we've got the Internet! And that makes a difference. There are loads of places that you can sell stuff online and what's more the audience is massive.
There are plenty of different ways to sell things and your idea of rubbish may be exactly what someone else has been looking for.

Where to sell online

The obvious place to begin is eBay.co.uk because it has such a large audience. Being such a monster of a site means that it's a great place to do some research. You can check out what kind of stuff is selling and even the kind of prices that they are fetching. Don't forget to factor in the fees though.

If you have larger items to sell then you might want to consider sites that are more community based - more area specific to help with collection/delivery. If you live in Mytown, for example, then just type "stuff to sell mytown" into a search engine and you'll get back some relevant sites. Some of the better known sites that offer area specific advertising include:

   GumTree.com
   CraigsList.co.uk
   VivaStreet.co.uk
   FreeUKClassifieds.com

How about specialists sites

There are companies that specialise in particular goods, which means that you may get a better price for them. Again, just search for something relevant, e.g. "old books to sell" to find these companies. Here's a few to give you an example:

   ChinaSearch.co.uk
   TheCurtainExchange.net
   MumfordBooks.co.uk

Selling stuff offline

If you're not comfortable selling stuff online then the old car boot sale is still an option and there's plenty of them around. Check out CarBootJunction.com to find one in your area.

Just remember, there's money knocking around your house and if you've ever sold something on eBay before you'll know that it's actually quite exciting! In fact, it's addictive - so watch out, you could end up selling the kitchen sink!
